What Are Some Acne Treatment Options?

The Science Behind Acne Treatments

Acne is used to describe skin breakouts and as we know there are different types of acne and working out the type or types of acne that our clients have will mean we can come up with a faster way of getting results.
Acne skins are usually fragile.

Often they are over cleansed and stripped of oil and the skins natural protective barrier and often they are also lacking in moisture.

We treat acne skin with kid gloves while we eliminate the congestion and treat the bacteria that is causing the inflammation and pustules.

We will also devise an easy routine for you to do at home to keep it all on track.

We will also work on the acne scarring and pigmentation once the active breakouts have diminished.

Types Of Acne That We See In Clinic

Acne can present in different forms, and understanding the different types can help in identifying and treating the specific acne concerns.

Here are the common types of acne we see and treat:

  • Whiteheads: These are small, flesh-colored or white bumps that appear when pores become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. The clogged pore remains closed, creating a raised bump on the skin's surface.
  • Blackheads: Similar to whiteheads, blackheads are also clogged pores, but they have an open surface. The dark color occurs when the pore's contents are exposed to air and oxidize, resulting in a black or dark appearance.
  • Papules: Papules are small, raised bumps that are typically pink or red in color. They occur when the walls around pores break down due to inflammation, causing the surrounding skin to become tender and swollen.
  • Pustules: Pustules are similar to papules, but they have a white or yellow center filled with pus. These inflamed and pus-filled bumps can be painful and are often referred to as pimples.
  • Nodules: Nodules are large, solid, and painful bumps that develop deep within the skin. They are caused by a buildup of bacteria, oil, and dead skin cells. Nodules can be stubborn and may take longer to heal compared to other types of acne.
  • Cysts: Cysts are deep, painful, and pus-filled lesions that are similar to nodules. They are often larger and have a soft, fluid-filled center. Cysts can cause significant discomfort and have a higher risk of scarring.

It's important to note that acne can vary from mild to severe, and individuals may experience a combination of these different types.

Acne treatments need to target the active outbreaks while also looking after the unblemished. For milder cases, using the correct skin care regime and keeping the skin clean and strong will keep mild acne controlled and minimise the chance of scarring.

Many of our acne clients will also use nutritional supplements to further boost their skins strength and if they have linked their diet to their skin health, avoiding the triggers where possible.

Why Over The Counter Acne Treatments Don't Work

Acne skin must be deep cleaned to remove the build up of dead skin cells that are trapped with the pores. The trapped cells build up with the skins oil ( sebum) causing the congested feel and look of the skin.

In the past many treatment option included things like scrubs to physically remove the build up. But scrubs cause damage to delicate skin and you create a cycle of skin being scrubbed and damaged on the surface without the deeper congestion being dealt with or eradicated.

Then there are other over the counter treatments that may contain ingredients like Benzoyl Peroxide. Now we are not discrediting this ingredient. In mild cases it can work. It's purpose is to remove dead skin cells and treat bacteria. But it is incredibly drying. So for mild cases when it is used for a short time or for spot treatments it will have results.

The clients that we see have usually tried the over the counter preparations like this and not had success and it is devastating to hear all of the remedies and treatments that they have tried with limited success and lots of frustration.

How We Treat Acne And Get Results

Our acne treatments in Melbourne include the China Doll Carbon Facial which uses a Q-Switched Laser.

The China Doll Carbon Facial is an ideal treatment for acne-prone skin and congested skin, as it aids in reducing acne and other skin conditions such as rosacea, dermatitis, oily skin and open pores.

The Q-Switched Laser is a gentle and effective blast of laser that works to remove dirt and bacteria from the skin. It is also suitable for treating pigmentation and other scars.

The other part of the puzzle is to remove the bacteria and this is where LED Light Therapy come is.
LED Light Therapy is a gentle and effective treatment option for acne. By exposing the skin to specific wavelengths of light, this therapy helps kill acne-causing bacteria, reduce inflammation, and promote healing.

Our LED Light Therapy sessions are tailored to your unique skin needs, and the soothing light encourages skin rejuvenation and a reduction in active acne breakouts.

Some clients will also have a series of chemical peels recommended.

They are a proven method for treating acne and improving overall skin health. Our experienced professionals will carefully apply a customised solution to your skin, which exfoliates the outermost layers, unclogs pores, and reduces acne-related pigmentation.

Chemical peels not only target active acne but also stimulate collagen production, leading to a smoother and more radiant complexion over time.

How Does A China Doll Carbon Laser Work?

The China Doll Laser Facial, also known as Carbon Laser Skin Rejuvenation, is a cutting-edge cosmetic treatment that aims to give you a flawless, porcelain-like complexion. This innovative procedure has gained significant popularity for its ability to provide remarkable results after just one session.

During a China Doll Laser Facial, a thin layer of carbon cream is applied to the treatment area. This cream acts as a photo enhancer, absorbing the laser light energy to effectively target and treat various skin concerns.

The laser is then used to gently heat the carbon particles, causing them to explode and exfoliate the outermost layer of the skin. This process helps remove dead skin cells, excess oil, and impurities, leaving the skin refreshed and rejuvenated.

The China Doll Laser Facial offers additional benefits for the skin and it is one of our most popular services for this very reason.

It helps reduce the appearance of common imperfections such as fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and pigmentation irregularities.

The treatment also promotes skin radiance, giving the complexion a vibrant and youthful glow. Additionally, it works to minimise pore size and improve overall skin tone, creating a more even and uniform appearance.

One of the key advantages of the China Doll Laser Facial is its minimal downtime.

After the procedure, most clients can immediately resume their daily activities without significant interruption.

If you're seeking a non-invasive, effective solution to achieve smoother, more radiant skin, the China Doll Laser Facial may be an ideal option.

It is recommended to consult with a qualified skincare professional or dermatologist to determine if this treatment is suitable for your specific skin concerns and goals.

Light Based Therapies - Mediluxe Facials

Light-based therapies, such as LED (Light Emitting Diode) therapy or photofacials, are commonly used in skincare for various purposes, including treating acne and improving the appearance of the skin.

Here's a general understanding of how light facials can help:

LED Therapy: LED therapy involves the use of different wavelengths of light, primarily red and blue, to address specific skin concerns.

  • Blue light: It has antibacterial properties and can help kill the acne-causing bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes. Blue light therapy is often used in the treatment of acne to reduce inflammation and the number of active breakouts.
  • Red light: It can stimulate collagen production, improve skin texture, and promote skin healing. Red light therapy is commonly used for anti-aging purposes, as well as to reduce the appearance of acne scars.

Our LED Acne Facials can also include a skin peel - See our Acne Treatment page. We can explain the all the options for the optimal results for your skin.

Skin Peels For Acne

Skin peels can be an effective treatment option for acne-prone skin. We use powerful exfoliating agents, such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), skin peels help to remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells, unclog pores, and reduce inflammation associated with acne.

The exfoliation process of a skin peel helps to slough off the buildup of dead skin cells, oil, and debris that can contribute to the formation of acne. By clearing away these impurities, skin peels can help to unclog pores, preventing the formation of whiteheads and blackheads.

This deep cleansing action helps to reduce the occurrence of acne breakouts.

In addition to unclogging pores, skin peels can also reduce inflammation caused by acne. The exfoliating agents in the peel help to calm and soothe the skin, reducing redness and swelling associated with acne lesions.

By minimising inflammation, skin peels can promote the healing process and improve the overall appearance of acne-prone skin.

Regular sessions of skin peels can provide long-term benefits for acne management.

By maintaining a consistent peel schedule and using an at home treatment plan, you can prevent future breakouts from occurring.

The exfoliation and deep cleansing action of skin peels help to keep the pores clear and minimize the accumulation of acne-causing impurities.

Furthermore, skin peels can also help existing acne blemishes heal faster.

By promoting skin cell turnover and stimulating collagen production, skin peels aid in the regeneration of healthy skin cells. This can lead to faster healing of acne lesions and a more even-toned complexion.

It's important to note that the specific type and strength of the skin peel will depend on your skin's condition and severity of acne.

Achieving Clear Skin Is An Ongoing Approach

In addition to the above mentioned professional acne treatments we offer at Hush Clinical, there are steps you can take right now to improve your acne and promote clearer, healthier skin.

  1. Gentle Skincare: Avoid over-cleansing your skin, as it can strip away natural oils and disrupt the skin's balance. Opt for gentle, soothing, and moisturising skincare products. We have a range of professional skin care ranges that we will recommend to be used in conjunction with our treatments.

  2. Stay Hydrated: Hydration plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy skin. Drink at least 2 litres of water daily to support the body's detoxification processes. Ample water intake aids in bile flow, promotes regular bowel movements, helps eliminate toxins through sweat, and ensures proper urinary system function.

  3. Sweat it Out: Regular exercise that induces sweat can be beneficial for acne-prone skin. Sweating helps detoxify the skin by clearing out impurities. While exercise can increase sebum production, which may exacerbate acne, the detoxification benefits outweigh this concern. Just remember to cleanse your skin afterward to remove any sweat and debris.

  4. Stress Management: Stress can contribute to acne by affecting hormone levels and increasing sebum production. Prioritising self-care can make a significant difference in your skin health.

  5. Hormonal Balance: Hormonal imbalances can play a significant role in acne development. Consider getting your hormone levels tested by a healthcare professional. This information can guide targeted treatments and help address any underlying hormonal issues contributing to your acne.

Remember, treating acne is a journey that requires patience and consistency.

By combining professional treatments like LED Light Facial and the China Doll Carbon Facial at Hush Clinical along with self care at home, you'll be on your way to achieving clear, radiant skin.

Most Sensitive Skin Isn't Actually Sensitive The Skin Barrier Truth Most People Never Hear By Jess, Owner of HUSH Clinical | 30 Years of Skin Experience Every week I meet people who tell me they have sensitive skin. Their skin is red. It stings. It feels tight. Products suddenly irritate them. Nothing seems to work anymore. And after more than 30 years treating skin, I've noticed something interesting. Around 90% of these clients don't actually have what I would consider true sensitive skin. What they have is a damaged skin barrier. What Is The Skin Barrier? Your skin barrier is your body's natural protective shield. Think of it as the brick wall that keeps moisture in and irritants out. When your skin barrier is healthy, your skin feels: Comfortable Balanced Hydrated Calm Resilient When the barrier becomes damaged, everything changes. Suddenly your skin becomes: Red Reactive Tight Dry Itchy Easily irritated Most people assume they have sensitive skin. In reality, their skin is simply crying out for help. How Do People Damage Their Skin Barrier? The biggest causes I see include: Over-Cleansing Many people believe that squeaky-clean skin equals healthy skin. It doesn't. If your skin feels tight after cleansing, you've likely removed too much of your skin's natural protection. Too Many Active Ingredients Retinol. Vitamin C. Acids. Peels. Exfoliants. These ingredients can be fantastic when used correctly. But when clients start layering multiple active products without guidance, the skin often becomes overwhelmed. Following Social Media Trends TikTok and Instagram have convinced many people that more products equal better results. The truth? Most people need fewer products, not more. Over-Exfoliation One of the most common mistakes I see. Exfoliation can improve skin texture and brightness, but too much exfoliation strips the barrier and leaves the skin vulnerable. The Signs Of A Damaged Skin Barrier You may have barrier damage if: Products suddenly sting Your skin feels tight after cleansing You experience unexplained redness Your skin feels dry but also breaks out Moisturisers don't seem to work anymore Your skin reacts to products you've used for years These symptoms are often mistaken for sensitivity. What I Recommend Instead The first thing I do is simplify. We stop chasing the next miracle product. We focus on restoring the skin. Step 1: Use A Gentle Cleanser One of my favourites is Synergie UltraCleanse . It removes makeup, sunscreen and daily buildup without leaving the skin feeling stripped or tight. Step 2: Reduce Active Ingredients Sometimes less really is more. Giving the skin a chance to recover can make a dramatic difference. Step 3: Focus On Barrier Repair Some of my favourite products for compromised skin include: Dr Spiller Sanvita Cream Eco by Sonya Glory Oil Eco by Sonya Super Fruit Hydrator Synergie DermaCalm These products help support hydration, comfort and skin barrier recovery. Step 4: Be Patient The skin barrier doesn't repair overnight. Consistency is often more important than intensity. My Biggest Skincare Tip After treating thousands of skins over the years, one thing has become very clear. Most people don't need stronger skincare. They need healthier skin. When the skin barrier is functioning properly, many common concerns improve naturally. Less redness. Less irritation. Better hydration. Healthier-looking skin. Not Sure If Your Skin Is Sensitive Or Barrier Damaged? That's where professional advice makes all the difference. At HUSH Clinical, we offer complimentary skin consultations to help identify what's really happening with your skin and create a plan that's tailored to you. Because the right skincare doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes it's simply about giving your skin what it needs most.
