HIFU FAQ – HUSH Clinical Melbourne

What is HIFU

HIFU stands for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound.

It’s a non-surgical treatment that uses focused ultrasound energy to heat deeper layers of tissue under the skin. This stimulates collagen production and creates tightening and lifting over time.

Unlike lasers or skin treatments that mainly work on the surface, HIFU targets deeper structural layers including the SMAS layer — the same layer surgeons lift during a facelift.

At HUSH Clinical, we use advanced Korean and European HIFU technology to customise treatments depending on your skin, age, comfort level and goals.

What Does HIFU Treat?

HIFU is best for:

  • loose or sagging skin
  • jawline softening
  • jowls
  • double chin
  • lower face heaviness
  • neck laxity
  • fine lines
  • skin crepiness
  • mild to moderate skin ageing

We also use HIFU on the body for skin tightening and contouring.

Does HIFU Hurt?

This is probably the number one question we get.

Honestly? Some HIFU machines absolutely can hurt.

A lot depends on:

  • the machine being used
  • the settings
  • the therapist’s experience
  • your own sensitivity

At HUSH Clinical, client comfort is a huge priority. We use newer generation technology that allows us to customise depth and intensity properly instead of just blasting high energy unnecessarily.

Most clients describe it as:

  • warm
  • prickly
  • occasional zaps
  • strange but tolerable

Certain areas like the jawline can feel sharper than others.

But it should never feel traumatic or unbearable.

Will HIFU Reduce Fat?

This is one of the biggest questions online about HIFU — especially with people worried about looking “too hollow” after treatment.

The answer is yes… but only when it’s used incorrectly, too aggressively, or on the wrong person.

HIFU works by delivering focused ultrasound energy into different depths under the skin. Certain depths can target small pockets of unwanted fat, which is why HIFU can be amazing for:

  • double chin reduction
  • jawline sculpting
  • soft lower face heaviness
  • contouring under the chin

This controlled fat reduction is often what helps create a more defined, lifted look.

But here’s the important part…

Not everybody wants fat reduction.

Some people actually need support, collagen stimulation and tightening — not volume loss.

At HUSH Clinical, we customise treatments carefully based on your face shape, age, skin thickness and goals. We don’t believe in blasting high settings across every face the same way.

This is also why therapist experience matters so much with HIFU.

Poorly performed treatments or incorrect depths can create unwanted hollowing in naturally lean faces.

Used correctly though, HIFU should create:

  • tighter skin
  • better definition
  • subtle contouring
  • natural-looking lifting

—not an overdone or gaunt appearance.

We always take a conservative, personalised approach and would rather under-treat than overdo your face.

How Long Does HIFU Take To Work?

Some people notice a tighter feeling quite quickly.

But real HIFU results happen gradually.

Collagen rebuilding takes time.

Most clients see improvement over:

  • 4–12 weeks
  • with ongoing improvement for several months

Results usually continue improving after each treatment.

How Many HIFU Treatments Will I Need?

This depends on:

  • age
  • skin quality
  • collagen levels
  • lifestyle
  • degree of laxity

Some clients are happy after one treatment.

Others get better results with a series.

For things like jawline sculpting, double chin reduction or more advanced skin laxity, we often recommend around 3 treatments spaced over several months for best results.

Is There Downtime After HIFU?

One of the reasons people love HIFU is there’s usually very little downtime.

You may experience:

  • mild redness
  • tenderness
  • slight swelling
  • tingling
  • temporary sensitivity

Most people return to normal activities straight away.

Some clients even come in during their lunch break.

Who Is HIFU Best For?

HIFU works best for people with mild to moderate skin laxity who want improvement without surgery.

It’s especially popular for:

  • jawline definition
  • lower face tightening
  • preventative ageing
  • neck tightening
  • clients not ready for surgery

Very loose or heavily sagging skin may require a combination approach.

We’ll always be honest about what HIFU can and can’t achieve.

Why Choose HUSH Clinical For HIFU?

There are now a lot of clinics offering HIFU.

But not all HIFU is equal.

At HUSH Clinical:

  • we’re owner operated
  • we have over 30 years experience in skin
  • we customise treatments properly
  • we use advanced technology
  • we focus on natural-looking results
  • we prioritise honest advice over sales pressure

Most importantly — we actually care about long-term skin health, not just selling treatments.

How Many HIFU Shots Do I Need?

This is probably the second most common question I’m getting asked lately.

Apparently ChatGPT is now telling everyone they need “800 shots” for HIFU to work properly.

Honestly, it’s not that simple.

Different HIFU machines measure shots completely differently depending on:

  • the technology
  • the treatment head
  • the line type
  • energy delivery
  • treatment depth

Some machines use:

  • single dots
  • single lines
  • multi-lines

All of these deliver energy differently, so comparing shot numbers between machines is almost impossible.

For example, at HUSH Clinical we use:

  • single dot technology
  • single line heads
  • multi-line heads

Across two different advanced HIFU systems.

That means one client may receive:

  • 800 shots
  • 2,000 shots
  • 6,000 shots

…and none of those numbers automatically mean “better” or “worse.”

What matters most is:

  • correct depth
  • proper placement
  • energy settings
  • facial anatomy
  • lifting strategy
  • therapist experience

Not just chasing huge shot counts.

A lot of clinics market massive numbers because it sounds impressive, but more shots does not always equal better results.

In fact, overtreating the face is something we try to avoid completely.

At HUSH Clinical, every treatment is fully customised based on:

  • your skin thickness
  • facial structure
  • collagen levels
  • age-related changes
  • comfort level
  • whether we are lifting, tightening, contouring or rebuilding support

We have multiple treatment heads across both our Korean and European HIFU systems, and we choose the technology that best suits your face — not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Some clients need stronger structural lifting.
Others need collagen support and soft tissue rejuvenation.
Others need a combination approach.

That’s why proper consultation and customisation matters far more than simply asking how many shots you’ll get.
